PLC Field Experiences

Let the Poudre Learning Center help your students and you have meaningful life experiences in a local outdoor setting. PLC field experiences at all levels are created cooperatively between PLC staff and classroom teachers to meet current class needs and applicable state standards. Activities are led by PLC staff and voluteers or by trained classroom teachers when appropriate, to provide a positive, inquiry-based learning experience for students. Meaningful experiences can be provided at any time of the year.

K-12 Orientation

The Poudre Learning Center staff offers K-12 Orientation for teachers several times throughout the year. The class is usually held on a Saturday during the school year and is eligible for professional development credit through your school district. Check the calendar to find available classes. Register for K-12 PLC Orientation through District 6 Professional Development or call the Poudre Learning Center at (970)352-1267.

We recommend that you come prepared for what's in store during the workshop, by downloading the Orientation Agenda ahead of time!

Confirm Date

Please check the Poudre Learning Center calendar for a date that works for your class. Remember that under certain conditions the PLC can handle more that 1 event. For example: the calendar may reflect a reservation for 80 participants using the Monfort classroom. An additional 200 participants could use outdoor locations during the same time period. After looking at the calendar fill out theField Experience Request form to confirm your date with the PLC. Once you have submitted the reservation form someone from the PLC will contact you to confirm the date and help with any planning needed.

Confirm Transportation

This step goes hand-in-hand with the step above. Along with confirmimg a date with the staff at the Poudre Learning Center you also need to confirm transportation to and from the center. Basic information and/or forms from your school district are as follows:

Goals and Objectives

A primary purpose of the Poudre Learning Center is to offer a place for outdoor learning that provides students of all ages opportunities to experience the native and man-made elements of our Cache La Poudre riparian and prairie ecosystems in a natural setting. It serves as a focal point for interdisciplinary learning that includes the science, history, aesthetics and economics of the natural area and the river and its wetlands.

Pre-visit and or Planning

The PLC planning process allows educators and the staff at the Poudre Learning Center to collaborate to produce the most meaningful field experience possible for you and your students. This process leads to the creation of a field trip that complements and extends your current classroom curriculum. As we work together we are able to identify what pre-visit activities will best prepare your students for their field experience and how it will then transfer back into the classroom afterwards. The Teachers in Residence at the PLC are available to help you plan and carry out your pre-visit activities, your field experience, and your post–visit activities. This planning tool assures that all field experiences are aligned with school curriculum and state standards, impacting students as an extension of the classroom and not as stand-alone activities. Parent Notification

Post-visit

PLC staff is available to make follow-up visits to your school to reinforce concepts learned on your field trip. Just call or email to set a time.
